Should I Write A Novel

How to write a novel

Should You Write A Novel?

My first long novel is around 160,000 words. Shamefully I began it around 2013. It is still lying on my computer as a lost file waiting to be edited.

The reason I am telling you is that writing a novel is a huge commitment of time, energy and resources.

Not to put you off my latest novel is well under way at 25,000 words in two weeks. I feel that is good progress as race through the write. Once in the flow with the write it just comes out.

So when considering if you should write a novel the first thing to be considered is YOURSELF and your habits. Once you get that sorted or worked out you are ready to go.

I like to write things that move me, inspire me, make me think or even to provoke thinking.

Then a storyline - loose and flexible - is in my head and I build everything from there.

So deciding whether to write a novel is a very personal choice that depends on your interests, passion, and commitment. Here are a few things worth considering:

  1. Passion and Interest: If you have a story or idea that you are passionate about and that excites you, it can be a great motivator to start writing a novel.

  2. Commitment: Writing a novel is a significant undertaking that requires time, effort, and dedication. Consider whether you have the commitment to see the project through to completion.

  3. Creativity: If you enjoy being creative and expressing your thoughts, writing a novel can be a fulfilling way to explore and release your imagination.

  4. Personal Growth: Writing a novel can be a challenging but rewarding experience. It can help you develop as a writer and provide a sense of accomplishment.

  5. Audience or Personal Gratification: Determine whether you're writing for personal satisfaction or with the goal of sharing your story with others. Some people write simply for the joy of creating, while others aspire to publish and reach a wider audience.

  6. Time Management: Assess your schedule and see if you can carve out dedicated time for writing. Consistency is key when working on a long-term project like a novel.

  7. Learning Curve: Recognize that writing a novel involves a learning curve. You may need to learn about plot structure, character development, and other aspects of storytelling.

  8. Support System: Having a support system, such as writing groups or friends who share your interest in writing, can be valuable. They can provide feedback, and encouragement, and help you stay motivated.

Remember, there's no right or wrong answer about writing a novel. If you desire to write a novel, it can be a fulfilling and creative journey. Just start, set realistic goals, and enjoy the writing process. If you're unsure, you might want to try writing short stories or essays first to gauge your interest and skill in storytelling. Ultimately, the decision is yours, and choosing a path that aligns with your goals and interests is essential.

I hope this helps.
